Syncing through your own folder

Keep a local-only Vautir vault in step between your devices through iCloud Drive, Dropbox or another folder you share, with no server.

A vault kept only on your devices has no server to sync through. With a folder your devices share, they sync through that instead. Our servers never see the vault, and neither does whoever runs the drive.

It works in the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows and Linux apps. The browser extension and the web vault can’t reach a folder.

Set it up

  1. On the first device, open Account, Sync folder, Choose a folder, and pick an empty folder in your drive: iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, Syncthing or a network share.
  2. On each other device, choose Open a vault that syncs through a folder on the first screen. Enter your master password, your Secret Key and your license, then pick the same folder.

Stop syncing forgets the folder on that device. Its file stays for the others.

How it works

Each device writes one encrypted file of its own, and reads the others’. Two devices never write the same file, so your drive never has a conflict to settle, and never makes “conflicted copy” files of your vault.

  • A change on one device reaches the others at their next sync.
  • Changes to different fields of the same item are combined.
  • If two devices change the same field, the item keeps one value, and the other version is kept as a new item beside it.
  • If one device edits an item another deleted, the edit stays.

A new master password follows to your other devices too.

What the drive sees

Ciphertext: how many devices you have, about how much each holds, and when it changes. Not an item, a title or a website.

What to know

  • The drive can put an old file back, or delete one. Your other devices then see an older version of what that device held; what they hold themselves stays.
  • It needs a folder that a drive’s own app keeps in step. WebDAV and S3 aren’t reached directly.
  • What needs a server still isn’t there: sharing, families, legacy contacts, recovery codes, item history and files kept with items.
