Travel Mode

Travel Mode takes every vault you haven’t marked as safe off all your devices, and keeps it off until you turn Travel Mode off. A device someone looks through on the way holds only what you chose to carry, and nothing on it says there is more.

Before you travel

1. Open Vaults, and mark each vault you’re happy to carry as Safe for travel. At least one vault of your own must be marked.
2. Turn on Travel Mode: under Account in the browser extension, the web vault and the desktop app, and under Vaults on iPhone, Mac and Android.
3. Vautir says which vaults stay and which leave, and asks you to confirm.

The vaults that aren’t marked leave this device at once, and your other devices as soon as they sync.

While you travel

• Only the safe vaults are listed, searched, filled and exported.
• New logins are saved in a safe vault.
• A device you log in on gets only the safe vaults.
• The apps show no Travel Mode setting, and no mark on vaults. There’s nothing on the device to turn off.
• You can’t make a new vault or start a family until it’s off.

When you’re back

Log in to the web vault, open Account, and turn Travel Mode off. Every vault comes back, whole, on every device, at its next sync.

It can only be turned off in the web vault. That’s deliberate: the device you carry gives no sign it’s on.

What to know first

• It hides. It doesn’t resist force. Someone who makes you log in to the web vault can turn it off.
• Sync before you turn it on. Edits a device hadn’t uploaded to a vault that leaves are lost with that device’s copy.
• Your settings travel only with a vault of your own. Your theme and the sites where Vautir never offers to save live in your own vaults.
• Exports and share links are outside it. An export file on the device, or a share link you made earlier, still shows what it shows.
• We can see that you’re travelling, and which vaults you marked safe. We can’t read any of them.

How it’s kept

Travel Mode isn’t a setting the apps keep to themselves. Our server holds the other vaults back, so syncing, logging in on a new device or reinstalling an app brings nothing back. Each change is a statement your account signs, so the server can’t start or end a trip by itself.
