Your Secret Key and Emergency Kit

What the Vautir Secret Key is, why you need it for every new device, and how to print and keep your Emergency Kit.

The Secret Key

Your Secret Key is a second secret, beside your master password. Vautir makes it on your first device, and it’s never sent to us. It looks like this:

NP1-4T7K2M-9QXW3D-R8H5C-2YJ6N-K7P0A

Because of it, your vault can’t be opened by guessing your master password, even from a stolen copy of our servers’ data: an attacker would need the Secret Key too.

When you need it

Whenever you log in on a new device, with your email and your master password. Devices that are already logged in keep it for you.

Where to find it

  • Under Account in any Vautir app that’s logged in.
  • In your Emergency Kit.

The Emergency Kit

The Emergency Kit is a page to print, or save as a PDF. It holds your sign-in address, your email, your Secret Key, and a line to write your master password on, if you choose to.

Print it from Account, then Recovery code and Emergency Kit.

A kit printed right after you make a recovery code shows that code too. Vautir never shows a recovery code again, so that’s the copy to keep.

Where to keep it

Somewhere safe, apart from your devices and from your email’s password: a fireproof box, a safe deposit box, or with someone you trust. Your recovery code and your email together open your account.

A saved PDF isn’t encrypted. If you keep one, keep it somewhere you’d trust with your passwords.

If you lose it

Print a new kit from any logged-in device. If you’ve lost every device too, your recovery code gets you back in, with a new Secret Key.
