How strong is my password?
How long your password would hold out against guessing, with the same estimator Vautir's Security view uses. Nothing leaves your browser.
- Guessing on a website
- Cracking a stolen database
Runs entirely in your browser. Vautir never sees what you make or check here.
How it works
The estimate comes from zxcvbn, run in your browser. It splits the password into the pieces an attacker would guess, such as a common word, a year or a keyboard row, and counts how many guesses each piece takes.
Vautir's Security view uses the same estimator, and also counts the item's own name and username as guesses an attacker would try first.
A strong password can still be leaked. Check it with the breach check too.
Questions
Is it safe to type my password here?
Yes. The check runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere: turn off your network and it keeps working. Still, the safest habit is to check passwords you're about to use, not ones you already do.
How is the strength worked out?
With zxcvbn, which looks for what attackers try first: common passwords, words, names, dates, keyboard patterns, repeats and sequences. It doesn't just count kinds of characters, so P@ssw0rd1! scores as weak as it is.
What do the times mean?
How long guessing would take: against a website that limits attempts, and against a stolen database of quickly hashed passwords, where attackers try billions of guesses a second.
What counts as strong enough?
Vautir's Security view calls a password weak below a score of 3 of 4: within about a hundred million guesses. For anything important, use a random password from a generator, different for every site.
